Hi!

I’m jdm2. I’ve been around for a while. Recently created the boriken.social Mastodon instance to facilitate the migration to the fediverse of the Puerto Rican online community.

I’m a software developer by trade, I collect books, listen to a bunch of music, love basketball and I’m very vocal about local and international politics.

And I’m covid conscious!

Hola!

Soy jdm2.

I think I might finally be getting into this #VTuber trend because my wife has started sending me videos by #Ironmouse, who's apparently one of the most popular VTubers in the world... and she's Puerto Rican and disabled to the point of being home/bed bound. And I'm just so happy for her career?

Like, yeah, it sucks that she struggles with her health stuff, but in a world that really hates disabled people and wants to hide them and let them die, seeing someone find something like this for themselves and be HUGELY successful is so nice.

Also I'm a sucker for a good boricua success story. #MastodonPR, #PuertoRico #Disability

I’m just gonna bump this thread, for folks who want to learn more about the complexities of the politics around PR’s status question and why calling us gringos might (and should) earn you a sucker punch. There seems to be a lot of assumptions about what PRs “actually want” and whether the latest—or any—referendum represents our actual wishes

Toot.CatKat Marchán 🐈 (@zkat@toot.cat)@neoteotihuacan@mastodon.nz @blogdiva@mastodon.social not rigged in the sense of faking votes (although there really has been a thing where a bunch of literal dead people were found in the active voter rolls), I'm telling you that there's subtleties to the _way the referendum is defined_ (which is usually determined by the in-power party, the statehood party), which is designed to inflate the numbers to make support for statehood bigger than it actually is. That, combined with the number of people who vote for statehood out of fear of repercussions that are not necessarily going to happen. For example, there's been referendums in the past where there were two separate commonwealth choices, intended to split the vote. Again, a referendum put out by the PNP, and which the PPD boycotted, effectively making the results look like statehood won (again), without representing the votes of the people who abstained from voting just on this issue, in protest (which was a LOT of people, just like in this case)
