Social media can be interesting and useful, but it can also be toxic and make your mind and brain sick. If you are neurodivergent, a good dose of disconnection or improving the signal-to-noise ratio can be very good for your health.

Part of the ‘allure’ of Bluesky was that until February 2024 you could join it only by invitation. A bunch of celebrities joined, which added to the “exclusivity’ factor so beloved by Americans who are enthralled by celebrities, since we don’t have a monarchy to fawn over. Also, #FOMO.

I understand the reason behind the longing for algorithms is #fomo. However, according to Zipf's law, only few posts get very popular in terms of interactions, while posts basically get stars proportionally to their boosts. That is, the posts that an algorithm would rank up, are boosted by users anyway.
So if you see a boosted post you likely see a popular one. Also, navigate to the explore tab of any instance; it already ranks all posts from their global TL (unlimited list.) For special interest, just follow special accounts.
#fomo might also result from the fact that most popular content on the fediverse doesn't really compare to that of other platforms (in terms of agressiveness, etc.)
Maybe the advanced rankings of https://lemmy.ml better fit the needs of an occasional reader?
You had to be there. Sometimes that's not such a bad thing.

Copilot will index everything if you give it access to everything. It's chmod 444.
The problem is a combo of half-baked product AND a CluelessBossFOMO that forces AI down the throat of the company and permit access to everything. While security people are screaming and warning that chmod 444 is stupid.
A week later, the AI indexes everything and Joe Blow starts asking why is his salary so low compared to others. Suddenly CluelessBossFOMO blames security people. And newspapers blame (only) the half-baked product.

Great, the second time-slot of #osco24 has 3 sessions I would like to participate in
So much #FOMO

This is my Gamescom-free social media platform it seems. #FOMO
@ottaross Ok, ok. I've totally got #FOMO. Just ordered 1 for me and 1 for @steggy #monsterdon
Emotions are funny things. I am so thrilled to see photos of good friends meeting up at #user2024, enjoying tutorials and talks. Nerding out over #rstats things.
I am also feeling some extra depression today for missing it. Not because of general #fomo, but this is also my 6 month milestone after having covid, and I'm still mostly bedridden with long covid. So its not just missing out _right now_, but continuing to miss out for such a long time and still not seeing the light at the end.
@mattwynne @dddeu @diana For years I’ve considered attending the @dddeu conference/events at the recommendation of @rebeccawb . Your description makes me wish even harder that I could have been there. #JOMO #FOMO Maybe next year!
