Finished #audiobook Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor. Well, I didn't really enjoy this book all that much until I got to the end. The story has two parallel stories in it. One is about a disabled woman and her trials and adventures, and the other is about robots after the end of humanity and their trials and adventures. Ultimately, I did enjoy the end. Which if you know the story is a whole level of irony, I guess. But I won't spoil it here. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ #bookstodon

I'm enjoying Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, although I've had to settle for the fact that it'll probably be the only book I read this month. (I do not remember the last time that happened!) I have some 650 pages left and I started this exactly a month ago today. (So I've read about 370 pages. 😶)

Anyway, the dynamic between Strange and Norrell is amusing and I quite relate to Norrell's obsession over his books.

I do wish there was a bit less atmosphere or whatever it is that makes this such a slow read for me. Maybe the man with thistledown hair will cause some mayhem soon.

Help me pick my next read.

Or dont.

IDGAF.

I gave up on Fortune Falls because book 1 was communalist survivalism & book 2 is " oh btw yall get Super Soldier Serum " out of literally nowhere.

So yeah, a paradigm shift of that magnitude is jumping the shark for me.

So with that in mind..what is next?

Just ahead of my March 18th book release (and on Pi day!!!), the LA Times ran a wonderful review by Ilana Masad of THE EXPERT OF SUBTLE REVISIONS. The final paragraph below:

“The Expert of Subtle Revisions” isn’t a political book, per se, nor is it moralizing. Menger-Anderson doesn’t overtly connect 1933 Vienna with the first and second Trump administrations in Hase’s near future. Instead, the plot follows Hase’s investigation of her father’s disappearance and Anton and Zedlacher’s eventual encounter with time traveler Haskell. But as Hase herself knows from editing Wikipedia, neither history nor language are neutral, and Menger-Anderson superbly demonstrates how a writer needn’t shy away from the political tensions of a historical period but can use them to heighten and contextualize setting, character and plot."

When the past comes back to haunt you. ‘The Danger of Life’ is a fast-paced thriller set in Scotland during World War Two. It uses many real settings, transported eight decades back in time.

This modern image shows Spean Bridge railway station, where trainee commandos arrived en route to the wartime Commando Basic Training Centre at Achnacarry Castle. It is visited by the central character as the story moves towards its conclusion.

Hey internet. Is there a tool that can import my Amazon wishlist to Bookshop.org? (UK versions, if that matters.) I keep putting off doing it, but if it were easy somehow I'd get round to it faster and then replace my wishlist links, and that would be good.

Finished “Legitimate Authority” (read in Spanish, so “Autoridad ilegítima”) by Noam Chomsky on this transatlantic fight. It’s a series interviews from mainly 2021-22. They’re both prescient in many ways and also so out of date, given the world changes by the week now. But very insightful.
